Newspaper of Record?

January 15th, 2008

An occasional journalist holds the New York Times in exalted status, heaping on superlatives like “newspaper of record” - and I don’t think they mean a record of puppy potty training.

Interesting allegory. I’ll let you draw your own conclusion.

On Sunday, the Times ran a feature story painting veterans of America’s most recent foreign wars as domestic killers, leading off with a Las Vegas case. A team of Times reporters were able to find 121 veterans charged with, or convicted of, homicide.

Fortunately, the Internet has enabled people to almost immediately point out the flaws in such tawdry ad salesmen’s drivel.

  • John Dilulio, in the Weekly Standard, does the math and notes that at 121 cases, veterans have a lower incidence of homicide than 18-24 year olds in general, not higher.
  • Powerline’s John Hinderaker further notes that the Times crime count covers six years, whereas the higher rate for 18-24 year olds in general is an annual figure - meaning the rate of veteran-involved murders is much lower than the general population.
  • It took an actual journalist to note that the Time’s lead anecdote - the Las Vegas case - was quite likely a case of self-defense.

The fellow who brought this New York Times article to my attention put it best: the Times should be ashamed.

I hope the authors don’t get the next Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts.

The New York Times is ‘hell bent’ on thie efforts to destroy the morale of US troops. They are also trying to ‘air’ every covert action America has for the Secular Progressive Liberal crowd.
Were it be up to me, they would be forced to bankruptcy as they are morrally already bankrupt!

  2. Jim Brown Says:

If it’s immoral, racial, communist, or anti-american, you can bet the New York Times will cover it, and if there isn’t anything of that nature going on, they have been found to simply make-it-up. What a worthless rag.

I guess you can imply from this research how much other journalism is objective. From my experience, none of it is. Sad commentary on the profession, but the cowardly, lazy populace of America has trained them to be this way. They are in business to sell papers and promote advertising, not objectively report news. I guess this works in the “new America”.

  4. Hawk Says:

As the internet becomes more and more the default medium for news and information, readership of traditional newspapers will decline. Don’t expect the journalistic quality to become any better as this happens and the print media scrambles to retain subscribers.

  5. Larry Sigurdson Says:

Oh Steve: Ouch! Let’s not paint with too broad a brush. Not all Journalists are Liberal Democrats with a hidden agenda dedicated to advancing the DNC. Some of us are actually Conservative Republicans. There are even a few Journalists with national credentials that are well respected, Bill Crystal and Fred Barnes come to mind, just to name two.

On the other hand, you are correct in your assessment of the liberal East Coast establishment news media. Far too many reporters, editors, publishers, columnists, news directors and photographers are overtly biased for socialism and rabidly anti-Reagan Conservatism.

  6. Steve Says:

Finally, someone has engaged me in honest debate. Thanks, Larry. I am just reeling from reporters who chase sensation rather than objective reporting. The things I know about first-hand and are reported on in the paper are simply wrong. I guess you can tell a factual story many ways by selectivly choosing the facts you use. This is dishonest, but has been my experience with media accounts.

Again, thanks for your objective commentary. It is the reason forums (or is it still fora?) like this are created.
