Pillaging Taxpayers With Green Energy
February 11th, 2007Everyone supports renewable energy, or “green” energy. The question is, at what cost? Sparked by news coverage today that Clark County’s government is flush enough to pay 50% more for its fleet of cars so that they may burn cleaner fuel, I find myself wondering: how much extra should we loot taxpayers to put our governments out there on the edge of energy technology?
Late last year, I got a tip that Gov. Guinn, in an unusual move for a lame-duck Governor, had ordered that all copy paper used in 2007 and later would be required to have an unusually high percentage of recycled paper, at cost of about 50% more than normal paper. Governor Gibbons agreed with me that this would increase tax burdens beyond that necessary to get the job of Government done, and reversed the Guinn edict.
I believe if rich people want to pay more to assuage their environmental guilt, that’s fine. But government is financed by just as many people who aren’t rolling in dough, people who should not be bled on that altar.
