New NPRI Study Pursues ALEC Lead

February 23rd, 2008

Attentive readers of the Beers Blog learned a couple of weeks ago that my opponent Dina Titus was right: sometimes Nevada ends up at the top of bad lists. Like this one - some research that ranked Nevada highest in hidden taxation.

ALEC apparently sent a copy of their study to the Nevada Policy Research Insitute, in whose craw the study stuck. This week, NPRI released their take on this sad state of affairs.

There’s a sucker born every minute. I guess a lot of them live here if they believe that we have it good as far as taxes go. The real bonus of not having an income tax is that the form doesn’t need to be filled out. Other than that, it seems that Nevada Government is in business to maximize profit, not serve the people. If people are stupid enough to let this go on, it is a shame. Maybe it is a function of our overall education rate in Nevada, or maybe it is a function of people being lulled to sleep with promises of “free stuff” or “taxing the rich”. Whatever it is, enough of them are under the spell.

I guess this is a good time to recognize the great fraud perpetrated by our so-called “republican” Governor Guinn. Nobody seemed to notice as he went along, and even led, the looting of the treasury to the tune of $835M. Only four short years later, the wolves are scratching at the door again. Can nobody stop the great raping of our children’s future? I love the way Dina and her bunch claim that every tax increase is for the “good of the children” as she overtly spends their unearned wealth. Unfortunately, the mesmerized will not see the truth until the checks stop coming. Oh, well, I guess we are no smarter than other human civilizations have been…..then again, there is no evidence that we should expect to be, right?

I take umbrage at the remark, “Nobody seemed to notice as he went along, and even led, the looting of the treasury to the tune of $835M.”. Being one of five people who instituted a recall against then RINO Governor Guinn we tried to educate the public as to what was coming down the pike. Unfortunately, We failed in our endeavors, but not for the lack of trying.

Your comment, “I guess this is a good time to recognize the great fraud perpetrated by our so-called “republican” Governor Guinn.” is very appropo in these times leading to a presidential election. We are looking at a “republican” nominee being foisted on the Republican Party with the hard core Members acting blindly in making their statement of supporting and electing one RINO John S. McCain. McCain is as much a “republican” as Guinn was. Shall we comment and acknowledge, four years hence, that we have again made a mistake? I thought Republicans were smarter than that.

[...] Being a state without an income tax is a double edged sword. On the good side, it makes government funding much more stable than our neighbors who rely on income taxes. The down side is that some of our citizens seem to feel that without an income tax, Nevada citizens are somehow underfunding government. They get to feeling guilty, and call for higher-still taxation. Our legislature, however, has seen to it that we collect as much as our surrounding states - we just do it more stealthily, just like Forbes found in this study, and ALEC found recently in a much broader study.
