The Bill Of The Week

March 6th, 2007

This week’s most popular bill is SB92, judging from my inbox.

SB92 seeks to bring consistency to handgun rules and regs in all 17 of Nevada’s counties. It sounds like Clark County’s new sheriff is strongly opposed. First, he introduced a bill to double the cost of a CCW permit, probably to create something he can bargain away in exchange for concessions on SB92. More recently, he’s offering CCW reciprocity (something long sought by Nevada 2nd Amendment activists) in trade for maintaining his separate, duplicate gun registration system.

I support SB92 without amendment and oppose AB21.

Senator Beers welcome aboard! S.B. 92 makes such sense for Clark County and the rest of the state. Sheriff Gillespie, and his predecessors, have never been able to justify Clark County’s unique position regarding the 1989 pre-emption law. I’ve heard that they have solved only one crime in over 40 years of the law and that they have no idea how many handguns are currently in Clark County. Conservative estimates are that the there are more than a million guns registered, but absolutely no clue as to how many are still here.

A.B. 21 is an end run to keep Nevada residents from exercising their Article 1 Section 11 Nevada Constitutional rights. If passed only the rich and elite will be able to afford a CCW.
