Protecting Schools From Terrorists

March 30th, 2007

My bill to change Nevada law to the way it was in 1990, and the way it is in California, Utah and Oregon, was heard in the Nevada Senate Homeland Security Committee yesterday afternoon.

Last month, this was one of my typical incoming emails on the topic:

Bob,

When I first heard of your bill (by word of mouth) to allow teachers to carry guns I thought it was crazy. After reading your article in Nevada Business Journal magazine. I understand and agree. Worst case scenario, I would imagine if my child was in harms way teachers might try to protect him/her as well as themselves. Keep up the good work!

Please put me on record as strenuously apposing your idea of arming teachers in the school room. Part of my opposition is based on observing the quality of SOME of those in position of teacher (which may have little to do with ability to teach). I truly believe that a measurable amount of the problems in the schools is the supervision and permissiveness in allowing the dress of faculty. It is very difficult to enforce standards on students when standards are so low for faculty. I would be more than happy to discuss further with you my thinking on this subject.

It’s hard to comprehend the off-topic response on an issue that is so real. Faculty dress codes have little to do with selected individuals carrying concealed weapons used to protect defenseless school children. If the argument held merrit, undercover officers dressed in street garb must be considered unfit to carry a weapon as well. The facts are that Al Queda has vowed to kill two million school children, video taped themselves practicing taking over schools, and have had school floor plans from schools from several states in the U.S. confiscated in raids. Must we continue to burry our heads in the sand and wait until the unimaginable happens because the grasseaters ignor the facts in their ficticious utopian worlds? Face the facts. In order to be a free society , sometimes means you must fight against those who wish to prevent us from enjoying it. Reno failed to react to the gang problem when it was small and now has an ongoing problem. Do we wait here or do we set a deterrent in place that may force radical forces to choose softer targets than such a precious resource as children?
