Local Governments Continue Hiring Binge

April 7th, 2008

Today’s Las Vegas Sun offered a front-page article/opinion that Nevada’s economic woes are causing illegal aliens to move back home.

Last week’s release from the state Employment Security economists boils it down to the numbers: compared to a year ago, there are 4,100 more government employees and 2,800 fewer private sector employees. In the construction trades, there are 7,400 less jobs than one year ago.

In focusing in on the new government employees, it looks like all of the government hiring has been done by local government in Clark and Washoe Counties.

Since state revenue is flat (surely you’ve heard the shrill cries of budget shortfall from the left), it makes sense that revenue would also be flat for local governments in Clark and Washoe. However, their hiring continues.

I worry that they are paying for all these new employees with reserves built up back when property taxes weren’t capped. If so, they are spending one-time funding creating new ongoing expenses and that’s not sustainable. When they burn through those reserves, there will be pain dealt liberally all around. Folks like Oscar Goodman and Bob Cashell are already asking the legislature to raise taxes on their citizens to expand their governments further. Imagine how they’ll sound if it turns out I am right.

If the non-stp hiring continues as City and State incime falls, maybe we will witness a law suit by a newly laid off hiree as the complaint seeks millions for false promises and expectations of continued employment! You can bet that some ‘bright’ enterprising attorney will try that angle!

  2. Bruce Feher Says:

Don’t forget the OTHER 25 million plus government “workers” nationwide!

  3. Helen Weils Says:

Now that’s a cool idea Lee. Has anyone explored the idea of a class action lawsuit on behalf of the taxpayers against Oscar
and his tax and spend minions and the Clark County board?
It’s an absolute disgrace. It’s time for Oscar to be ridden out of town on a rail for his arrogance.

The system will fall on its own. Unfortunately, the perpetrators will not suffer. It will fall suddenly, but they will circle the wagons around their interests. Citizens better wake up and see what is going on. It seems that the public never gets outraged until they are put upon in a big way. This will be too late and their heroes (Goodman, et. al.) will abandon them. Sad to see that even freedom-minded Nevada has fallen to the same tactic. Let’s just get rid of some until the (majority of the)public feels they do not have enough services. That alone should get rid of most of them.

Oscar Goodman is campaigning Washington to send federal foreclosure bailout money to city and state governments instead of directly to the homeowners. Currently only 50 cents of every tax dollar collected at the federal level makes it to the intended target. The bureaucracy and middle-men consume the other 50 cents. If the Goodman has his way, Nevadans will be lucky to get back 40 cents on that dollar.

Senator Bob Beers is the ONLY true rep that we have in Carson City! NO ONE ELSE provides us with this information! We need to remember his commitment to US in the upcoming election—no matter what part of the state you live and vote in!

  8. J. Clark/Chastn.Neigh.Pres. Says:

Well, let’s line up at city council and county commission, call for an appointment with our city councilpersons and county commissionpersons and let them hear what a few of us neighbors expect. Let’s not be intimidated that our letter to the editor may be used for the mayor’s dog do-do. Let’s not be silenced because he won’t listen. Let’s analyze what Chairman Reid of the Clark County Commission said/didn’t say. Let’s have an idea of our own to share instead of only hot air. Let’s meet the candidates before we vote. This takes time, remember they’ll be paid with our money AND be spending it! FREEDOM IS NO FREE.
