What Would Kurt Think?
April 15th, 2007The Las Vegas Review Journal has Geoff Shumacher write a once-a-week column in order to reassure the world that Erin Neff is a centrist. In his column today, he picks on three Republicans, suggesting the recently deceased novelist Kurt Vonnegut would likely have thought all three nuts, or at least wrong.
As Shumacher’s Republican number two, my idea to return Nevada’s guns-in-schools law back to the way it was prior to 1990 is “ridiculous” and “outlandish.” Even though he acknowledges the possibility my idea might save lives, he is concerned that it would hamper recruiting for teachers since those skittish about being near someone trained and armed would never come to work in Nevada.
This is an interesting argument, one not made yet by opponents. Never mind that California, Utah and Oregon all allow teachers to carry with far less training than I proposed - yet Nevada is the one with the teacher shortage.
However, to suggest Kurt Vonnegut would disapprove making Nevada’s law in this area like those of our surrounding states shows a profound unfamiliarity with Kurt Vonnegut’s writings and beliefs. Vonnegut understood the Second Amendment perfectly, as this five-minute-to-read essay demonstrates.
