Judicial Branch Budget
May 2nd, 2007The Judicial Branch budget was mostly completed today by the Joint Senate Finance-Assembly Ways & Means General Government Subcommittee.
The Judicial Branch had requested an increase in spending of $23.6-million, or 31%, from its legislatively approved $74.4-million current biennium budgeted spending. In response to our subcommittee request, the Branch “prioritized” their proposed increases… but only about $2.5-million came back prioritized “low” or “medium” priority, most of which was eliminated from their budgets today.
This is always an uncomfortable budget for the legislature due to the tensions surrounding the check-and-balance nature of the two different branches of government.

I understand that there is a trend throughout the country in state budgeting to reduce prison population to free up money for other stuff.
Will Nevada follow this trend?
I fear that this will result in higher crime rates. I know that they are targeting the drug user population. These population often will rob people or break into houses or sell drugs to fund their habit.
Has public safety become a low priority?
