Doublespeak
May 4th, 2008Brian Greenspun inherited quite an empire, successfully converting his father’s foresighted real estate purchases into a tremendous amount of cash. Ironically, he spends a big chunk of it every week pushing a socialist agenda by funding the Las Vegas Sun insert in the RJ.
Generally, the Sun’s agenda is subtle - but every so often, Brian’s sense of self gets the best of him and he unleashes quite the rant. The agenda comes raging forth and the cover is blown, and working people wonder about guilt amongst children of successful men. Often, the rants contain Orwellian overtones thicker than an 8th grade literature class.
Today, for example, Brian drops this wonker on us:
In 2003… many of our enlightened legislators and Gov. Kenny Guinn got behind a plan that would raise the revenue needed to build the roads, buy the schoolbooks, construct the campuses and educate our people toward the top of the heap rather than relegating them to the bottom… It was a good plan and, if it had passed, would have put our state in a far better position today than the one in which we find ourselves.
It was killed by some greedy businessmen and a no-tax ideologue from Washington, D.C., named Congressman Jim Gibbons.
Brian, it wasn’t killed. It passed. It was the largest percentage expansion of state government spending in Nevada history. It directly contributed to the position in which we find ourselves today by:
- lifting Nevada from a slightly below average sized state government to a slightly above average sized per person state government
- making Nevada a less attractive place to live for entrepreneurs
- and leaving our state government with a raging appetite for more.
And I hate to tell you this, but today’s Governor was representing us in Washington during that time and, aside from warning us against the idea during his ceremonial speech to the Legislature that year, wasn’t part of the debate or voting.

Does Brian quote a source to support that the plan passed was different this other imaginary Quinn plan? No, he does not. That demonstrates the excellent journalism standard that they have at the Sun.
I think Brian is right. I am sure that RINO Guinn, all the democrats and some other RINO’s would have passed a 10,000x larger tax bill if they could have gotten away with it. I am sure today if 10,000 x tax bills were passed then the Sun and all the democrats would be complaining about the grave need to raise taxes again.
Here is Brian’s source: “Late one night, after finishing our 5th shooter for the night, Quinn drunk out of his mind blurted out ——I want to raise taxes 10,000x!!!!!!!”

I have had many of my Letters to The Editor published in the L.V.SUN just because they get so many rebuttlas to my Conservative view. They are so Liberal and Socialistic in their views that I often am amazed at their stupidity.
If they did not have nice crossword puzzles and the numbers game I would not have read anything they publish.
Obama is a jerk and they play him up like he is the Messiah. Hillary lies and is written about as if she were actually capable of intelligent thought. Harry ‘Hands Up’ Reid gets featured so often that I wonder what pictures he has on a person of importance at the SUN.
Raising taxes is the favorite ‘pass time’ for Democrats. I’m just waiting for the ‘imputed property tax’ they will present just as soon as they figure out how it works!

Much as I despise the democraps, you have to admit, nobody has spent us into oblivion with no end in sight and no appreciable result than the RINOs in Washington the last 7 years. At least when the democraps spend away someone somewhere gets like $0.01 (or less) of value out of every dollar spent. With the current RINO spending, they can’t even FIND the money they sent out to even get the $0.01! - and it’s borrowed from China… nice.
Greenspun is insane. I’m wondering when the impassioned calls to raise school spending and save the poor starving teachers will end? My prediction? Not until people literally have no food for gas or better yet, to eat.
Ron Paul is the only candidate that had a plan to SAVE this country. Screw “change”, we need “overhaul” - trying to fix the current system is like putting gas in the Hindenburg to get it flying again.
I can’t wait until this state has to file bankruptcy so people can finally get down to prioritizing what is an essential government function. Apathy has driven this current situation, so I guess everyone needs a wake up call. Lack of food is a hell of a call to action.
BTW… on another note… met yet ANOTHER CCSD teacher the other day who LOVES her pay, LOVES her short hours, LOVES all of the days off, and of course LOVES the pension. Had no complaints at all about teacher’s pay. I’ve yet to find a teacher that has.

I also find that 90% of the time that I write a letter to the editor in the Sun it is published. The last time they called
to verify I asked them “Don’t you have anyone else that writes letters to you?” Apparently not, which says alot about their readership. I DO enjoy blogging on their web version.
Their readers get so upset it’s fun!
I particularly LOVE to tell Brian to ‘KISS MY GRITS’!
He’s an idiot. But then he’s a Demorat, same thing!
I also love saying kudo’s to Jim Gibbons to just saying NO
to new taxes and spending. And of course, to my FAVORITE
SENATOR BOB!!!
I had a great chance to rant at his suggestion that Terry Lanni run for governor. Talk about letting the fox in the henhouse!

I agree that the Sun has good puzzles, but is otherwise a waste of paper. It is sad that people fall for Greenspun drivel, especially since he is part of the rich elite. Do the people really believe he advocates taking from the rich to help the poor? I guess they do. To that I say: you get what you deserve.
Kenny Guinn was the single person that convinced me that our two party system is crap. Schwartzenegger is a close second. There is no republican party. There is simply a pro-abortion democratic party and an anti-abortion democratic party. If that is your single issue, you have a choice. If not, just follow the rest of the sheep if you like. If a so-called Constitution-supporting organization, like the Republicans say they are, can elect flaming socialists like Kenny Guinn and Aaaaaaanold, it is quite obvious that we actually have a one-party system similar to that of the Soviet Union (and of Russia today) and Iraq.
Somebody please point out where I am wrong here, because I am desperately looking for a reason to have faith in the current American system. Hope certainly does not spring eternal in my mind with our current slate of politicians. Please note that both parties have taken us to socialism over the last 65 years (no matter who was “in control”). I am really waiting for a logical explanation, but I have never gotten one, even after asking for the last 40 or so years.

While I do not pretend to understand the liberal philosophy or mindset, the one thing that drives me completely nuts is the use of intellectually dishonest terms such as “Pro-Abortion.” I don’t know of ANYONE who is “PRO-Abortion.” One may favor more (pro-life) or less (pro-choice) regulatory control on abortion procedures. This is one of those 5 cent buzz words that seem to have swallowed our society.
Calling Democrats “idiots” or “lame” also tends to reveal more about the intellectual level of the person doing the name-calling than it does about their misguided views.
I often prefer how Senator Beers beats them at their own game - in the realm of ideas. He maintains a civil level of discourse, while holding true to his principles and often he demonstrates liberals are just DEAD WRONG. Bigger government and higher taxes are economic killers. Their liberal icon, Bill Clinton, was nothing more than a man with questionable morals who happened to ride the economic boom created by the time lag in the Reagan-Era policies.
I think it tends to be easy for liberal elites, like Brian Greenspun, to adhere to ideas and philosophies that allow them to feel like they are somehow magnanimous. By increasing the size of government, they seem to think they are saving us from ourselves. They seek to take away self-reliance, thereby depriving a person of self-respect and ability to contribute to society in a positive way.
I just hope that, as conservatives, we are able to band together to defeat the measure to raise the gaming tax, and to postpone (or eliminate) this insane cost of living adjustment for state employees.
