Fred Thompson Survives Debate
October 10th, 2007The Hill’s Sam Youngman reports Fred Thompson failed to hurt himself in today’s GOP presidential debate, as his critics had predicted.
Former Sen. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.) emerged from Tuesday afternoon’s Republican debate, his first, having delivered a solid performance free of major gaffes and largely unscathed by rivals.
It probably answered skepticism among pundits and analysts who questioned whether the former senator could go toe to toe with trail-hardened candidates and come out looking competent on the economic issues upon which the debate focused.
Thompson provided statistics to back up answers, and warned against uncontrolled spending while suggesting that the economy is doing well and “there’s no reason to believe we’re headed toward an economic recession.” He stuck to the well-worn but traditionally effective GOP theme of advocating lower taxes and spending.

Factcheck.org researched what candidates said at the debate. Fred Thompson’s statements checked out… better than most.

No real evaluation of who won and who did poorly in the republican debates can be made. Although in most cases the debates were well managed it was obvious that at least one of the panel members (and I believe he was the lead panelist) demonstrated a definite bias favoring Giuliani. At one point, as one of the candidates tried to expand on his comment he was cut off saying he only had a set amount of time. The same panelist then asked Giuliani the question and the two joked and took much longer than the other candidate was allowed. Personally - I favor Obama or Edwards; however, I fear Clinton may become the democratic candidate. If that happens I will vote republican and at this point I would consider either Thompson or Romney.
